Dr. Emily Moss has been a Professor of Music and Director of Bands at the University of New Mexico in August of 2023. She conducts the Wind Symphony, oversees the graduate conducting program, and teaches other courses in conducting and wind literature. Dr. Moss previously taught at California State University, Los Angeles. Her duties included conducting the Wind ensemble and the Symphonic Band. She also taught undergraduate and graduate conducting and music education course. She held a similar position at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.

Dr. Moss is originally from the Pacific Northwest. She began her studies at the University of Washington in Seattle where she earned a bachelor’s degree in music education. After teaching middle school band for six years in both Washington and Arizona, Dr. Moss served as a teaching assistant with the University Bands at the University of Northern Colorado, earning her Master’s degree in Wind Conducting and the Doctor of Arts in Music Education and Bassoon Performance, studying with Kenneth Singleton, Richard Maybe, and Charles Hanson.

Her professional memberships include College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) where she recently served as the President of the Western division, World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE)_ where she serves on the Board of Directors National association for Music Educators (NAfME), and the National Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi.

The Albuquerque Concert Band has been bringing great concert band music to the Albuquerque metro area for almost 60 years. From its humble beginnings in 1967 as the Albuquerque Municipal band with 20 people, to its current incarnation of the Albuquerque Concert Band with over 80 members, this premier New Mexico community band continues to serve up the time-honored tradition of free concert band music to Albuquerque’s citizens.

The Albuquerque Concert Band is an all-volunteer ensemble of adult musicians that rehearse and perform throughout the year. Members of the band come from all walks of life; healthcare workers, lawyers, homemakers, music educators, blue collar workers and more. The band performs 15 – 17 concerts a year. Rehearsals are once a week on Monday evenings.

Performances during the Fall/Winter concert series are held at the Eldorado HS PAC, once a month, from October to April, except for our holiday concert at the historic KiMo Theatre in December. Summer concerts are held twice a month at the Albuquerque Balloon Museum and the New Mexico Veterans Memorial Park from June to August.

Since 2004, the Albuquerque Concert Band has awarded a yearly scholarship, the Bruce Kroken Scholarship Award, to a New Mexico high school senior involved in their school’s music program. Named in honor of ACB conductor Bruce Kroken, the $1,500 scholarship encourages students to continue their involvement with music at the college level. The winners of the scholarship are required to perform with the Albuquerque Concert Band at the annual Kroken Scholarship concert in April.

The Albuquerque Concert Band, along with the Santa Fe Concert Band and the Los Alamos Community Winds, hosted the Association of Concert Bands national convention in Santa Fe, May 3rd-8th, 2022, at the Santa Fe Hilton Historic Plaza Hotel. Musicians and bands from all over the country attended this 5-day event.

The ACB has performed in Grants, Las Cruces, Los Alamos, Los Lunas and Ruidoso. The band has also performed at PopeJoy Hall, the New Mexico Veteran’s Memorial Park, the International Balloon Fiesta, and the Albuquerque Bio Park. The ACB has played shared concerts with the Mesilla Valley Community Band from Las Cruces and the Baylor Wind Ensemble from Baylor University. The ACB has also featured and performed with many well-known soloists from around New Mexico and the country. The band performed at the Los Alamos Community Winds Band Festival and Honor Bands, featuring world-renowned composer Frank Ticheli.
