The Spinal Cord Injuries/Disorders (SCI/D) Social Worker serves as program coordinator administratively responsible for the New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care System (NMVAHCS) SCI/D program. The SCI/D program provides a full-range of care for all eligible Veterans who have sustained injury of the spinal cord or have a generally stable neurologic impairment of the spinal cord.
Incumbent provides direct patient care services in the program area. Incumbent manages the daily operation of the program, develops policies and procedures for program operation and prepares reports and statistics for facility, VISN, and national use. The incumbent manages and controls the use of data related to the program regarding day-to-day functioning and program evaluation. The incumbent ensures the SCI program is in compliance with VHA directives and care is rendered pursuant to the guidance of Clinical Practice Guidelines.
FUNCTION OR SCOPE OF ASSIGNED DUTIES
The SCI/D Coordinator plans, develops, and implements components of the SCI program within the Hub and Spokes System of Care. This responsibility includes but is not limited to:
Administering information and analytical systems to evaluate and enhance the quality of service provided to Veterans. Develop and implement information systems to track service activities including visits, referrals, inpatient days, patient demographics, equipment utilization and patient satisfaction. Develops implements, and evaluates clinical guidelines and protocols to establish appropriate utilization of services.
The SCI/D Social Worker performs a wide range of services and provides technical assistance to State, local, and private agencies and universities. Technical assistance provided is based on monitoring activities and program reviews and the development and analysis of information. In addition, the incumbent uses sound judgment in the interpretation of trends and patterns; the application of guidelines; and the recommendation of program enhancements. The incumbent performs analysis, development, review, research, design, and contact work as possible with various agencies (public, DOD, state, etc).
Performs work related to the review, monitoring, analysis, planning, and assessment of various programs and is responsible for key project activities related to the planning, development, and implementation of the program component.

_BASIC REQUIREMENTS:_
Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States.
Education: Have a Master's degree in social work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for master's degree in social work.
Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM Website ( )
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:_
GS-12: Applicant must possess a minimum of one year of post-MSW degree professional social work experience in the field of health care. This experience must have been in a clinical setting and must have demonstrated the potential to perform advanced assignments independently. (A clinical setting is a medical center, clinic - medical or psychiatric, residential treatment center, or any other type of facility where social work participates in a collaborative treatment and is identified with the medical profession.) Experience must have been obtained AFTER earning a Master's Degree in Social Work.
Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator or manager must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level. Their experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. They may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. In addition, the candidates CV/Resume must demonstrate the professional KSAs below.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. In-depth knowledge of the program coordinated, and demonstrated knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.
2. Knowledge and skill in management/administration, which includes supervision, consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
3. Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
4. Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet multiple deadlines, and evaluate assigned program area.
5. Ability to provide training, orientation, consultation and guidance within clinical specialization of practice.
