The requsted intern will be assigned to the Division of Resource Management for Petroglyph National Monument. The Division is responsible for all aspects of natural and cultural resource management including ?ora, fauna, geomorphology, archaeology, ethnology, museum collections and GPS/GIS mapping. The Division is also responsible for compliance with NEPA and Section 106 of the NHPA.
The intern will be responsible for assisting with projects related to cultural resource management. Primary duties will include curation and cataloging of musuem objects and archives, assisting with ?eld archaeological surveys, and using GPS and GIS to document and map resources. Opportunities may be available to participate in planning and compliance activities.
Location Description
Petroglyph National Monument is within the city limits of Albuquerque, New Mexico's largest metropolitan area. Petroglyph is jointly managed by the National Park Service and the City of Albuquerque and has numerous issues including Wildland Urban Interface. The monument protects approximately 23,000 presumed prehistoric petroglyphs made by the ancestors of 23 a?liated tribes in New Mexico and Arizona. There are also more than 350 identi?ed archaeological sites within the monument.
Training Provided
Any and all staff training will be available as well as resource management speci?c training such as GPS and GIS, archaeological survey techniques, museum curation, and safety. Additional opportunities may be available.
Educational/Recreational Opportunities
The intern will have access to staff and all available research and numerous educational institutions in the area.
There are abundant opportunities for recreation including hiking, camping, skiing, snowboarding and mountain biking.
