The Department of Veterans'' Affairs (VA) has outlined a five-year plan to end Veteran homelessness. In order to make this goal a reality, the VA works closely with the Department of Housing and Urban Development and has a variety of programs specifically targeted toward homeless and at-risk Veterans. The New Mexico VA Health Care System announces a Social Worker position vacancy for the Housing Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The HUD-VASH Social Worker''s primary responsibilities include case managing Veterans who meet the definition of homeless and chronic homelessness. The HUD-VASH Social Worker must be capable of working with various community providers and apartment managers in rural communities/cities where HUD-VASH vouchers have been allocated for homeless Veterans. The HUD-VASH Social Worker should be familiar with the following models and approaches to assist Veterans with accessing treatment and maintaining safe affordable housing: housing first, harm reduction, linear model, motivational interviewing, evidenced based substance use disorder and and mental health treatment, and other techniques used in housing complex and high need Veterans.
The work includes frequent contact with Veterans in their apartments and at VA, and communication with HUD Public Housing Authority staff to assist Veterans with acquiring a voucher and completing the lease agreement. Case management includes coordinating care with providers at the VA Medical Center, assistance with money management, applying for financial assistance, skill development, apartment search planning, and providing other functional assistance. The HUD-VASH Social Worker is required to enter progress notes, workload, and data entry in the North East Program Evaluation Center and Homeless Operations Management Evaluation System. Case Management experience highly desireable.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Education. Have a master''s degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work _may not_be substituted for the master''s degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work.
Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level or they may be pending completion of state prerequisites for licensure/certification examination.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
